The Game Plan

When the world arrives in Atlanta for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they'll push the boundaries of what’s already considered the loudest soccer stadium in America. With $200m in event-specific renovations and an expanded World Cup seating capacity of 75,000, all eight matches (including a semifinal on July 15th) will host an atmosphere never before witnessed at Atlanta’s downtown crown jewel.

Thanks to fans having registered a booming 102 decibels during United FC matches, Mercedes-Benz stadium is already known for its thunderous atmosphere. When closed, the unique dome creates an acoustic chamber that amplifies every cheer, chant and drumbeat. Adding to the atmosphere, the international sound experts at Danley Sound Labs (HQ’d down the road in Gainesville GA) installed a revolutionary speaker system that delivers a crystal clear wall of sound across the entire stadium, making even the upper bowl feel like Olé all day.

SEATING GUIDE

LOWER BOWL

You're in the acoustic sweet spot, where the stadium's Jericho Horn speaker system and the retractable roof's eight-petal design create an amplified cauldron effect. Sections 101-103 are the stadium's largest, with up to 60 rows, and can access the main plaza and its “Window to the City”. Then again, higher rows in the west endzone can actually see downtown Atlanta through it across the field.

CLUB LEVEL

The 200-level sections feature just 12 rows, making them the smallest sections in the stadium. Check if your seats offer access to either of the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Clubs, which sit between the 30-yard lines and offer 6,000 square feet of all-inclusive food and beverage. Their retractable glass overhead doors open to connect the climate-controlled interior directly with the seating bowl.

UPPER DECK

Here you’re positioned at the ideal angle to appreciate the massive, 360-degree halo board (58 feet tall, 1,100 feet long) while maintaining clear views of play. The 100 Yard Club stretches the entire length of the football field, while the newest addition is the Sports Illustrated Lounge, a 6,500-square-foot club space with 700 cushioned seats and its own private elevator that opened in 2024.

AROUND THE STADIUM

Pregame Plan: If you’re concerned that a downtown location means no traditional pre-game activities, rest easy: the Home Depot Back Yard offers 11 acres of greenspace adjacent to the stadium, on the site of the old Georgia Dome. While World Cup activities have yet to be finalized, gamedays typically feature live DJs, drumline performances, kid play zones, tailgating and much more.

Fan Festival: Just a short walk from the stadium, FIFA will be spinning up their enormous Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park, creating a 21-acre beating heart for the city’s World Cup celebration. Expect massive screens to air all World Cup matches and everything from international food vendors and live music to cultural exhibitions from participating nations and interactive soccer experiences.

Cultural Crossroads: As if the match itself wasn’t enough, the stadium sits at the crossroads of some of Atlanta’s most popular destinations, including the Western Hemisphere’s largest aquarium, the College Football Hall of Fame and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. For all of that, a ticket to a World Cup match in Atlanta is a passport to far more than just 90 minutes of the once-in-a-lifetime soccer.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK

If history is any indication, Atlanta’s wildly affordable “fan-first pricing” model should be in effect for World Cup matches, which means $2 hot dogs and $5 beers might be yours for the taking (somebody get those parched Ecuadorian fans from Qatar a heads up!) Speaking of beers, those $5 pours can be enjoyed across the 1,264 taps distributed throughout the stadium’s 16 bar zones, including dedicated bars for local breweries like Wicked Weed and SweetWater. Regional flavors can also be found on the food side by those willing to hunt. Williamson Bros BBQ was founded in 1990 by brothers Larry and Danny, who rode around the South in a Chevy Blazer they won with a $100 raffle ticket looking for the perfect location. Now a bottled sauce empire, their smoked wings and pulled pork nachos are still a taste of Atlanta culinary history.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Public Transportation: MARTA's Blue and Green line trains run every few minutes and deposit you practically at the front door via GWCC/CNN Center Station. The city is expanding service for WC26 with pre-game shuttle trains and an upgraded Breeze payment system.
  • Parking: Pre-purchasing is essential, as World Cup matches will sell out parking completely. Falcons and United members who own Mercedes-Benz vehicles get access to the free Mercedes-Benz Loyalty Lot closest to Gate 1, so keep an eye out for similar deals . Electric vehicle charging is available in Red Deck, Silver Deck, Orange Deck, Blue Lot, Yellow Lot, and South Lot

FINAL FACTS

Officially recognized by Guinness World Records, the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium isn’t just the largest iris-style retractable roof ever built; it's a marvel of engineering. The eight massive triangular panels weigh in at over 450 tons each, yet they move with mechanical precision in just eight minutes. But almost as eye-catching is the "Window to the City", a 16-story, 22,500 square foot transparent wall at the western end of the stadium that offers panoramic views of Atlanta's skyline. Just remember that you’re there for the Seleçao, not the selfies!

Surrounding the open roof is the Halo Board, a 360-degree video display “ring” that stretches 1,075 feet in circumference and stands 58 feet tall. Visible from every seat in the house, it turns the entire venue into an immersive entertainment experience. Tack on industry-leading LEED Platinum certification thanks to 4000 installed solar panels and a 600,000 gallon underground cistern sure to make any AS Roma fans proud, and you have a stadium that remains a technological marvel nearly a decade after opening.
